Week 1 Reflection

Task 1: create a blog on Blogger.
Create your own blog at www.blogger.com, following the instructions on the handout. For your first blog post, describe what you learned while creating the blog and your reflection on using a blog for class.
You need to post at least once on your blog each week, describing what you think about the things you are learning in the course. This will be your weekly report. See more information on the Blog Page

Task 2: Post your blog's URL on the course wiki.
Please share the URL for your blog with your group on the Blog Roll in your group's wiki! Also, share your thoughts about creating your blog on Nicenet, as well. You'll find a link to your group's wiki on the left side of this course website.

I have been thinking and interested in using technology in my own classroom, so I took lessons on technology from several teacher training courses. In Korea, where most students have smartphones, and almost every single classroom is equipped with big screens, electricity, RGB and audio cables, and where every teacher is provided with a laptop computer, using technology while teaching is quite easy. However, for some reason, I have not actually use it in my classroom due to lack of time and mostly, effort.

This is the third blog that I have made so far. Hopefully, I would like to make the best out of this course and eventually benefit my students in my own class.

One thing to consider when putting this into action
: GIVING CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE GETTING STUDENTS USE(or MAKE) THE BLOG.

  1. Hi Kim, you are lucky enough to be teaching in such a "high tech" environment. Since your students are already used to using technology in their everyday life, you could achieve a great success implementing this course with them.
What's the problem with time? Is the difficulty to insert this course in your class progression? Or your personal timetable is too busy?

    1. I mean both. :) Primary and secondary education is based on national curriculum, and elementary school and middle school(Grade 7-9) education is compulsory in South Korea. This is why there is not much room for creativity (including technology) in my class. Lessons (based on the textbooks) are to be done by the end of a semester(or a school year), otherwise my students might be left behind.

Also, there is quite a lot of paperwork to be done as a civil officer(public teachers are like civil officers in SK), so actually I do not have enough time to integrate the content on the textbook and technology. I am trying to use one at a time, but still I am not sure it is enough for my students. Hopefully, we will be able to have some insight to use technology in our classes wisely! :)

  2. Hi Minjung: Your blog looks great so far. I often suggest people try to learn one new thing with the blogging each week, and by the end of the course they can be quite proficient in some more advanced uses of blogs. I agree about time: technology was supposed to save us time, but as often as not it can actually increase the burden on teachers. I think we need to select our technology carefully, and make sure what we are adding is valuable with regards to our pedagogical goals. -Robert

    1. Thank you for your kind message.

Yes, I agree that using technology does not actually lessen our burden as teachers. Moreover, as a beginner teacher(even though I have been teaching for almost 10 years, I still feel that I just began teaching career.) as myself, starting something new and making it actually work do take quite a lot of time and effort.
However, advanced teachers always say that once I start something and keep doing it, eventually I will feel so much more comfortable as time goes by. I hope I will feel more comfortable using technology in my class with less trial and error.
