Since this was the first week of the new semester at school, I am having a 'crazy' week getting ready for a new semester as a homeroom teacher, English teacher and a teacher working at student discipline teacher. Luckily, in less than two weeks, this 'working and studying at the same time' lif e would be over. I would never forget thlis wonderful experience with great teachers. :)
Anyway!!!
This week, the topic of the discussion was about different learning styles. Since I think I am a reflective, sensing, verbal and sequential learner, sometimes I find it uneasy to deal with active, intuitive, visual, and global learners.
So, for students whose learning styles are different from mine, (and for my students who might be struggling with their verbal, reflective, sensing teacher:)) I thought about ways to meet those students' needs. First was Pictionary. Pictionary is not a proper name for a dictionary from a certain publisher. Rather, it is an activity that students make a real dictionary of the unit by using pictures. They can either draw the picture or download from the Internet. Anyway, this is more suitable for visual learners who like to express using pictures and in a creative way.
Second was making a video-clip and using online discussion board. As there are many student with different learning styles, I thought it would be good to give chances for both visual and verbal learners using two different sorts of learning styles. So, if I get students to make a video and comments on it on a discussion board, visual learners would experience verbal learning and vice versa.
Lastly, I thought about infographics. For some students who feel comfortable with summarizing(analyzing) texts and describing it with graphics, an info-graphic would be one of the good tools to use.
Also, personally, if a teacher tries to use activities using different learning styles, the teacher will be able to indirectly experience different ranges of learning styles.

Dear Minjung,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your kind words. It’s been my pleasure working with you. I am convinced that your students are very lucky with you.
When I read your thoughts about visualizing vocabulary, I remembered an article I read a couple of days ago. Although the page is in Hungarian, the photos and the English sentences will be understandable for you if you visit http://angolnyelvtanitas.hu/angolnyelvtanitas-blog/kepekkel-jobb-mint-forditassal-3-kreativ-angolozos-tipp . The teacher’s opinion is that it is worth memorizing sentences which contain important grammar and/or vocabulary elements together with pictures chosen by the students.
Have you tried the online learning styles quiz http://www.edutopia.org/multiple-intelligences-assessment ? I’d be interested in the result. I am sure that you, too, have elements of all types, even if some of them are dominant.
Best regards,
Linda
Dear Linda,
DeleteIt was such a pleasure to work with you.
Thank you so much for the information and I will introduce what you are saying into my future lessons. :)
Oh! I haven't used the MI assessment! Thank you again for letting me know about this. I should definitely try it out!!
Best,
MInjung
yes, teachers should put in mind all students learning style to enhance the process of learning and make things better for students. Understanding that all students are intelligent but in a different way is highly motivating for teachers and empowering for students. After all, as teaching is a mission, we should do our best to make students understand, motivated to learn, as well as engaged as much as possible, so as teachers putting in mind multiple intelligences and different learning methodology will really be helpful.
ReplyDeleteFinally in a week, we are out of this hectic work/study life!
DeleteI am so sorry that we are heading toward the end of the course, though.
I surely agree with you that teaching is like a mission in which we cultivate students' knowledge and motivation. :)
Best,
Minjung

Hi Kim
ReplyDeleteIt is very unhappy moment that we are at the end of the course. We have shared many ideas and experiences among ourselves. Thanks for identification yourself as reflective, sensing, verbal and sequential learner. I also like your activities for learners in the class.
Best Wishes.
Prodhan
Hi, Prodhan,

Thank you for all your effort that you showed for the last nine weeks. I hope all of us can keep in touch with any means.:)
